“Little Nightmares III” is a horror adventure platformer game which follows Low and Alone, two children who work together to try and escape a dystopian realm called the Nowhere. The pair must survive against a host of frightening foes while seeking a path to safety.
The game is rated Advisory 16 (Suitable for 16 & Above).
Played from a side-scrolling perspective, the player will take control of either Low or Alone to navigate dim and desolate environments like dilapidated rooms, corridors and locales. Gameplay involves solving puzzles by moving environmental objects (e.g. boxes and switches) and using items such as keys to access new areas. The player character will use weapons like a wrench and arrows to attack various humanoid and creature adversaries or try to evade and flee from them to progress. Cinematic scenes help to advance the narrative of the game.
The game comprises some depictions of horror and a sustained sense of threat with ominous sound effects. These can be accompanied by some scenes of violence where characters engage in melee and ranged combat without strong details shown. There are also some bodies and body parts which can be encountered during exploration. Other disturbing imagery include a creature which gets crushed by a presser machine; a creature which is implied to cut into another’s body to extract its flesh; and the guts of a creature spilling out of a container. Death results in the screen going dark and can occur for several reasons, such as the player character being electrocuted, falling from a great height and getting crushed by falling debris. The ADV16 Classification Guidelines allow “depiction of frightening and disturbing sequences, or any abhorrent phenomena, whether natural or pertaining to the supernatural”.
